Iceland is preparing for a powerful storm expected to bring blizzard conditions, lightning, and coastal flooding across much of the country tomorrow. Þorsteinn V. Jónsson, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, described the approaching low-pressure system as “deep and intense,” warning that it will bring “just about everything” in terms of severe weather.

Orange weather warnings will be issued for the Westfjords, Strandir, and Northwest Iceland late tomorrow afternoon, while yellow warnings are already in place. Jónsson highlighted that blizzard conditions are expected in Northwest Iceland overnight into Thursday, with winds picking up sharply in the capital region as well. “This is a powerful storm that will arrive tomorrow morning and last throughout the day,” he said, adding that the worst of the weather is likely to subside by noon on Thursday.

Heavy rain is forecast for Southeast Iceland and the Eastfjords, increasing the risk of rockfalls and landslides. Thunderstorms could also occur in various parts of the country, posing a potential threat to the electricity grid if lightning strikes power lines. Jónsson urged residents to postpone non-essential travel, as road conditions could become hazardous, particularly in areas affected by blizzards.

Domestic flights are expected to be disrupted, though international flights from Keflavík Airport are likely to remain operational. Authorities are advising the public to monitor updates from the Icelandic Meteorological Office and the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration for real-time road conditions.

“People need to be prepared,” Jónsson stressed, noting that the storm follows a period of relatively pleasant weather. “This is an unusually deep and intense low-pressure system, and there is a possibility that it will cause some damage.” Coastal flooding is also a concern in southern and eastern Iceland due to strong winds and high sea levels.

The meteorologist emphasised the importance of staying informed, as additional weather warnings may be issued as the storm approaches. Residents are being urged to secure loose objects, such as trampolines, which could be blown away by strong winds.
