Luxembourg City’s municipal council has approved plans to expand CCTV surveillance, with Mayor Lydie Polfer formally requesting approval from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to install cameras in the city centre. While the exact number and locations remain undecided, the move follows a preliminary decision to enhance video monitoring, particularly in high-risk areas.

The final placement of cameras will be determined by the police, who will assess security needs. Mayor Polfer, of the Democratic Party (DP), emphasised that while cameras are not a standalone solution, they serve as a valuable tool for post-incident investigations, helping identify perpetrators and circumstances. First Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer, from the CSV, supports the expansion, citing increased crime in districts like Gare and Bonnevoie, where surveillance has already been bolstered.

The push for city centre cameras follows demands from a local WhatsApp group founded 18 months ago by businessman Alexandre de Toffol. The group shares photos of troublemakers, including pickpockets, to alert residents and businesses. De Toffol acknowledges cameras may not solve all issues but believes they will deter crime and assist police in identifying suspects. The mayor’s official request was submitted on 1 October, reflecting growing public and political pressure for stronger security measures.

While the exact rollout timeline is unclear, the city aims to provide police with the resources needed to combat rising offences effectively. The expansion aligns with broader trends in European cities balancing privacy concerns with public safety demands.
