On 1 October 2026, Barbados celebrates the 61st birthday of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, a trailblazer whose leadership has reshaped the island nation’s political landscape.
First elected to Parliament in 1994 after a stint as an Opposition Senator, Mottley rose through ministerial ranks—handling Education, Youth Affairs, Culture, and later serving as Attorney General and Minister of Economic Affairs—before becoming leader of the Barbados Labour Party in 2008.
She made history as the country’s first female Prime Minister in 2018, steering the BLP to sweep all 30 seats in both the 2018 and 2022 elections, and guiding Barbados’s transition to a parliamentary republic in 2021. Her legal distinction as the youngest Queen’s Counsel and her pioneering role as the first female Attorney General underscore her groundbreaking career.
Internationally, Mottley has earned accolades such as UNEP Champion of the Earth (2021), inclusion on TIME’s 100 Most Influential People (2022), and the WHO Director‑General’s Award for Global Health (2024). In September 2026 she addressed the 81st UN General Assembly, urging decisive climate action, and she continues to chair the WHO Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance while co‑leading the Bridgetown Initiative.
Born in Barbados and educated at the London School of Economics, Mottley’s family legacy in politics and her early achievement as the youngest Queen’s Counsel in 2002 reflect a lifelong commitment to public service. As she marks another year, the nation looks forward to her continued vision and leadership.
