Veteran Jamaican football coach Neville Bell has revealed that a single C grade prevented him from earning an English coaching diploma despite strong results throughout the rest of the programme.
Speaking on the No NDA Podcast, Bell described the extensive training undertaken by professional coaches and challenged the perception that coaching simply involves instructing players from the sidelines.
Bell said the English course involved dozens of assessments, with participants required to conduct different coaching sessions. He recalled being told from the beginning that receiving even one C would result in failing the diploma.
According to Bell, he received A or B grades across 71 assessments before receiving a C on one exercise.
Bell said his final assessment required him to organise players during a coaching session. He believed he had performed well but later learned that he had failed to communicate with the goalkeeper.
Bell explained that the goalkeeper was actually another coach participating in the course rather than a specialist goalkeeper, which contributed to him overlooking the position during his instructions.
Despite missing the diploma, Bell said his overall performance was strong enough for him to receive an English coaching licence, although it did not qualify him to coach at Premier League level.
Bell said he has also undertaken coaching education connected to Brazil and Jamaica, stressing that modern coaches require knowledge extending beyond football technique into areas including sports medicine and player management.
