Veteran coach and broadcaster Neville Bell has recalled how being initially left out of Jamaica’s starting team ultimately became one of the defining experiences of his playing career.
Bell, who represented Jamaica at youth level, shared the story during an appearance on the No NDA Podcast while discussing the importance of being prepared when opportunities arrive.
He said that during a tournament in Cuba, another player who occupied his position was initially selected ahead of him. Bell recalled being disappointed when the team was chosen without him.
His opportunity eventually arrived when coach George Prescott called on him and challenged him to demonstrate that he should have been selected from the beginning.
Bell said he responded by becoming the tournament’s MVP and earning selection to an all-star team, with his performance also receiving coverage in a Cuban newspaper.
He later represented Jamaica in Trinidad and Tobago, where he said he was injured during the tournament.
Bell said playing for Jamaica was among the achievements that came closest to fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a professional footballer.
He eventually played professionally in Canada, although he acknowledged that he never reached the European level he had originally envisioned.
