Niagara Falls was illuminated in the red, white and black of Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday night in recognition of the country’s 50th anniversary as a Republic.
The special illumination took place from 10:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. on September 24, with one of Canada’s most recognisable landmarks displaying Trinidad and Tobago’s national colours.
The Niagara Falls Illumination Board listed the display specifically in honour of Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th Republic anniversary. The event also served as the finale of a series of activities held in Canada recognising the milestone and highlighting the Trinidad and Tobago diaspora.
Trinidad and Tobago became a Republic on August 1, 1976. Republic Day is observed annually on September 24 because that was the date the country’s first Parliament met under the new Republican Constitution.
The Niagara Falls tribute placed Trinidad and Tobago among countries and causes recognised through special colour illuminations at the landmark, which has maintained a tradition of lighting the Falls for significant events and commemorations for more than a century.
The display came as Trinidad and Tobago marked 50 years of republican status with activities both at home and among communities abroad
