Although described as a relatively small team, the young paddlers have shown that determination, discipline and teamwork can produce impressive results. Their upcoming appearance in Panama represents an important milestone for the school and its athletes, providing an opportunity to gain international experience and compete against teams from beyond Trinidad and Tobago. Dragon boat racing demands strength, stamina, coordination and exceptional teamwork, with paddlers required to synchronise every stroke to propel their vessel across the finish line. For these young women, the experience is about more than medals. It is an opportunity to represent their school, their community and their country while continuing to develop their sporting abilities. Their story also highlights the growing participation of secondary-school students in dragon boat racing and the dedication of young athletes pursuing sporting excellence outside the more traditionally recognised disciplines. As they prepare for their first international appearance in Panama, the St Joseph’s Convent paddlers will be hoping to build on their silver-medal success and make San Fernando and Trinidad and Tobago proud.
