Welsh Place Names Reveal Part of the History Written Across Jamaica

Names found across Jamaica preserve connections with Wales, according to the National Library of Jamaica, offering one documented answer to how places acquired their identities. The examples point to several influences, including estate ownership and names carried across the Atlantic.

The library identifies Monmouth and Chepstowe in Portland, Llandilo in Westmoreland, Pencarne in St Mary, Newport in Manchester, Swansea in St Catherine and Milford in St Ann as Welsh place names. Familiar local geography therefore contains a layer of history that may not be obvious from the names alone.

The library also connects Morgan’s Pass and Morgan’s Valley in Clarendon with Captain Henry Morgan, describing him as a Welsh privateer who became lieutenant governor in 1673. Here, the connection is to a named historical figure rather than simply a place overseas.

Together, these examples show why the question of who named Jamaican places needs to be examined case by case. A name can preserve a geographical connection or commemorate a person, but its appearance alone does not establish who selected it, when the choice was made or how it became established locally.

The National Library’s account draws on a bibliography of works about Jamaican place names and history, including publications by Frank Cundall, Inez Knibb Sibley and Barry W. Higman. That documentary trail provides a starting point for investigating individual names more closely.

This evidence explains part of Jamaica’s naming heritage, rather than the present administration of addresses. It does not establish who now authorises street names, assigns house numbers or manages postal arrangements. The supported conclusion is narrower but revealing: some names Jamaicans use to locate themselves also preserve specific connections to Wales and to figures associated with the island’s colonial history.
