A senior opposition MP has condemned a fellow lawmaker’s remarks as “vile, despicable, dishonorable, and juvenile”, calling for an apology after what he described as a scathing personal attack on a younger colleague.
The MP, speaking during the budget debate, referred to the member for Toko Sangri Grandi, who had earlier targeted the Laventil West MP, a first-time parliamentarian from Betham. The speaker described the attack as “an affront to what we believe in” and compared it to the legacy of past national leaders, including Eric Williams, George Michael Chambers, and Keith Rowley.
“He launched a scathing attack on Laventil West, a young man who came from Betham, studied, and today represents the people of East Port of Spain,” the MP said. “It tells you that regardless of how difficult things might be in Trinidad and Tobago, all is not lost.”
The speaker also criticised the government benches for cheering and laughing during the exchange, calling on colleagues to “hang their heads in collective shame”.
“Trinidad and Tobago is deserving of better than this,” the MP declared, urging a “line in the sand” against such behaviour in Parliament.
