The president of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO) has described the Mighty Sparrow as an entertainer who transformed expectations of calypso and demonstrated that Caribbean artists could build lasting international careers.
Speaking at Sparrow’s national farewell ceremony, the TUCO president reflected on his eight Road March victories and eight Calypso Monarch titles, describing the achievements as extraordinary milestones in the history of the art form.
However, he argued that Sparrow’s greatest contribution extended well beyond competitive success.
According to the TUCO president, Sparrow understood that calypso required more than a strong voice. His performances combined theatre, humour, storytelling, social commentary and personality.
He credited Sparrow with establishing one of the Caribbean’s most recognisable artistic identities long before personal branding became a common concept in the entertainment industry.
The TUCO president also highlighted Sparrow’s ability to address political and social issues through memorable compositions while maintaining the distinctive wit associated with traditional calypso.
He said Sparrow demonstrated that the music was not merely seasonal entertainment but an art form capable of reaching international audiences and sustaining a lifelong career.
The tribute recognised his influence on younger calypsonians who have followed his example by pursuing opportunities beyond Trinidad and Tobago.
The TUCO president concluded by inviting the audience to give Sparrow a final standing ovation, acknowledging the entertainer’s contribution to Caribbean musical history.
