Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has announced that the Grandstand at the Queen’s Park Savannah will be refurbished and renamed in honour of calypso icon The Mighty Sparrow, known as the Calypso King of the World. The announcement came during Sparrow’s Celebration of Life, according to CCN TV6.
“Sparrow has handed us his music. It’s our responsibility to carry it forward and then to build something even greater,” Persad-Bissessar said. “I say we will refurbish the grandstand and we will name it in the honor of the mighty Sparrow.”
The tribute ensures that the legendary calypsonian’s legacy will be permanently marked at one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most iconic landmarks, the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain.
The Grandstand, a central venue for major cultural events including Carnival, will undergo refurbishment before being renamed. The project aims to preserve Sparrow’s contribution to the nation’s musical heritage.
The announcement was made as family, friends, and fans gathered to celebrate the life of The Mighty Sparrow, whose career spanned decades and earned him global recognition as the Calypso King of the World.
