Two-time Calypso Monarch Roderick ‘Chuck’ Gordon has revealed that he received information suggesting certain political references in his music could have affected his chances of qualifying for the Calypso Monarch finals.
Speaking on the Corie Sheppard Podcast, Gordon said he was told that references to Orlando Octave and the current Prime Minister were among the lines that could have worked against him.
According to Gordon, the suggestion was that removing those references might have improved his chances of advancing.
He did not identify the people who provided the information or establish that his lyrics influenced the official judging results.
Nevertheless, Gordon said the experience raised important questions about the freedom of calypsonians to address political matters.
He explained that artistes sometimes face difficult decisions when controversial material could potentially affect their opportunities.
However, Gordon maintained that compromising his message simply to secure a competition place would conflict with his responsibilities as a calypsonian.
He argued that political and social commentary remain essential to the genre.
The entertainer said he intends to continue expressing his convictions through music, even when the subjects may be uncomfortable for individuals in positions of authority.
