Neville Bell recalls accidental media career beginning with just ‘lovely’ during football commentary

Veteran Jamaican broadcaster and football coach Neville Bell has recalled how his long media career began almost entirely by chance, with his first attempt at football analysis producing little more than the word “lovely”.

Speaking on the No NDA Podcast, Bell said his brother had originally been approached about becoming a football analyst but was unable to commit because of time constraints.

Bell jokingly suggested that his brother recommend him instead, only to receive a call the following day inviting him to become an analyst.

He accepted and was soon placed behind the microphone for a football match despite having little understanding of what was expected of him.

Bell recalled the commentator describing a pass and then handing over to him for analysis. Unsure what to say, Bell responded simply: “Lovely.”

When encouraged to say more, he upgraded his assessment to “very lovely”.

Bell said he eventually became comfortable with broadcasting and later transitioned into television, where his first appearance brought another unexpected learning experience.

He recalled not initially understanding the director’s instruction to “cue” and only realising he was live when the director explicitly told him.

Bell said he settled into the broadcast using his radio experience and continued from there, beginning a television career that had never originally been part of his plans.
