Yesterday, a resident on Jarvis Street in Visgtabella called authorities after a wedge‑capped capuchin had been wreaking havoc on homes for three weeks.
Senior Game Warden II Steve Seepersad and Mr. Rocky Singh of the Original Old School Hunting Group, part of the Registered Hunters Search and Rescue Team led by Shamsudeen Ayube, arrived on scene. A trap was set as the monkey moved to higher ground, and the animal was captured safely.
The capuchin, not native to Trinidad and Tobago, was brought in through the illegal pet trade. Under the Conservation of Wildlife Act, the species is protected, and any non‑native animals pose ecological risks.
The captured monkey was handed over to Warden Seepersad on 17 September, and the resident was thanked for reporting the case and for not harming the animal.
The incident highlights the need for vigilance against illegal pet trade and underscores the role of conservation authorities in maintaining ecological balance.
