The sweet taste of freedom has arrived for Joseph “Medz Boss” Ollivierre.
Video circulating on social media shows the popular Trinibad artiste back outside following months in custody, with his release coming at a remarkable moment for Trinidad and Tobago’s Trinibad movement.
Medz Boss had been detained under a Preventive Detention Order during the State of Emergency. The order was revoked by Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander on August 24, but the artiste remained in custody because of a separate charge involving the alleged illegal extraction of electricity.
His return comes as several figures associated with rival sides of Trinibad have been publicly pushing for peace.
Kashif “Kman” Sankar, once one of Medz Boss’s biggest musical rivals, has publicly supported calls for his freedom while distancing himself from some of the rivalries previously associated with the music.
The pair’s feud produced Medz Boss’s popular diss track “Just Do It”, making the apparent shift particularly significant.
Medz Boss has also previously participated in peace efforts. In 2020, he joined other Trinibad artistes calling for an end to tensions between rival groups.
Now, six years later, the genre faces that question again.
Diss tracks and rivalries generate attention, but when musical conflicts become entangled with genuine street tensions, the consequences can extend far beyond entertainment.
