On June 16, 2014, northeastern Nebraska experienced one of its most extraordinary tornado events with the emergence of the ‘Pilger Twins.’ These two large and violent EF4 tornadoes appeared simultaneously near Pilger, Nebraska, creating dramatic scenes that captured national attention. The event unfolded in an exceptionally unstable atmosphere, which was conducive to the development of rotating supercell thunderstorms.
The Pilger tornado began around 4 p.m. and quickly intensified as it approached the Elkhorn River, carving a destructive path through the community. The tornado resulted in one death and approximately 20 injuries, wreaking havoc on homes and businesses along its 18.4-mile path. Remarkably, while the first tornado was still on the ground, a second EF4 tornado formed southeast of Pilger at 4:13 p.m., devastating rural properties but sparing the town itself.
The supercell that spawned the Pilger Twins was responsible for four EF4 tornadoes that afternoon, a rare occurrence captured extensively by meteorologists and storm chasers. These twin tornadoes traveled parallel paths, creating a spectacle that became etched in weather history. As a result of the disaster, the federal government declared a major disaster, noting over 100 damaged or destroyed structures in Pilger.
