Young Baker Defends Cupcake Prices Amid Online Criticism
A young Trinidad and Tobago entrepreneur is speaking out after facing criticism online over the price of her homemade cupcakes.
Sabrina 17, who recently shared her story in a TikTok video, responded to comments questioning why she charges $175 for a box of six cupcakes and $300 for a box of twelve. Rather than ignoring the backlash, she offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the realities of running a small baking business.
According to Sabrina, her prices reflect the cost of premium ingredients and the time required to produce each order. She explained that she uses Swiss meringue buttercream, a frosting made with butter, egg whites and sugar that is widely regarded as more labour-intensive and expensive than standard buttercream.
Beyond the ingredients, Sabrina revealed that her business is driven by a deeply personal goal.
“I just wanted to help take the load off my mother,” she said, explaining that she started baking to support her single mother financially and contribute to her household.
The young entrepreneur admitted that the negative comments have been difficult to deal with, saying she was afraid of how people would react to her pricing. However, she maintained that she refuses to compromise on quality simply to satisfy critics.
Her video has since sparked broader conversations online about the challenges faced by small business owners, with many pointing out that customers are free to decide whether a product fits their budget while recognising that handmade goods often come with higher production costs than mass-produced alternatives.
Others continue to debate whether the prices are reasonable, highlighting the different expectations consumers have when it comes to locally made specialty desserts.
For Sabrina, however, the focus remains unchanged: building a business she can be proud of while helping ease the financial burden on her family.
