Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has said the shutdown of Nutrien threatens 350 jobs, with workers already beginning to receive termination letters.

She linked the closure to broader concerns about natural gas availability and the performance of Trinidad and Tobagoโ€™s ammonia industry.

Beckles-Robinson said the company had entered a contract with NEC in 2023 and invested approximately $130 million in upgrades in 2024. She also referred to a dispute over port-fee arrears and other matters, without presenting the contract or correspondence during her remarks.

While acknowledging challenges with gas production, she questioned how the shutdown fitted with the Energy Ministerโ€™s positive statements about the sector.

She also sought an update on proposed discussions with Venezuela over gas supplies. Beckles-Robinson asked whether recent diplomatic engagement had produced an agreement or any arrangement that could help address Trinidad and Tobagoโ€™s shortage.
