The Ministry of Health is urging people at higher risk of severe influenza to get vaccinated, announcing that the 2026/2027 influenza vaccine is available free of charge at public health facilities throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
The ministry said its national surveillance systems continue to monitor respiratory illnesses, including influenza and COVID-19. Current surveillance data do not indicate an unusual increase in respiratory illnesses, it said. The public will be advised if significant changes in disease trends require additional public health action.
The vaccination appeal specifically targets children aged six months to five years, adults aged 65 and older, pregnant women, healthcare workers and people living with non-communicable diseases. The conditions identified by the ministry include diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and asthma.
People caring for loved ones in these groups were also encouraged to help them access vaccination. For pregnant women, the ministry said the vaccine also provides protective immunity to the baby after birth.
According to the ministry, vaccination can help reduce the risk of serious illness and complications associated with influenza. The 2026/2027 formulation contains inactivated influenza virus antigens covering three strains: influenza A H1N1, identified as the Switzerland strain; influenza A H3N2, identified as the Michigan strain; and influenza B, identified as the Tokyo strain.
The ministry urged residents to make vaccination part of a wider approach to protecting their health. Its recommendations include washing hands regularly with soap and water or using sanitiser containing at least 70 per cent alcohol, frequently cleaning surfaces that people touch, and avoiding the sharing of utensils, water bottles and towels.
It also advised people to avoid touching their face and eyes with unclean hands, limit close contact with anyone showing symptoms of illness, wear a mask where appropriate and stay home when unwell.
Residents seeking vaccination should contact their nearest public health facility to confirm availability, clinic schedules and any applicable eligibility requirements. Further information is available through the Ministry of Health’s website and official social media platforms.
