Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has held bilateral talks with Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez in New York, marking another step in renewed engagement between Trinidad and Tobago and its closest South American neighbour.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, where both leaders are participating in high-level diplomatic engagements.
While full details of the discussions have not yet been disclosed, the meeting follows weeks of preparations between the two governments and comes as Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela seek to strengthen their relationship following a period of diplomatic tension.
Earlier this month, Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers visited Venezuela, where officials from both countries established a working agenda covering trade, energy, agriculture, environmental protection, culture and security.
That meeting was described as laying the groundwork for a new phase of relations to be led by Persad-Bissessar and Rodríguez.
Energy is expected to remain an important area of engagement between the neighbouring countries because of their shared interests in natural gas development and the wider Caribbean energy sector.
Persad-Bissessar had previously confirmed that arrangements for her meeting with Rodríguez were finalised ahead of her trip to New York.
