Diego Martin Mayor Akeliah Glasgow-Warner has publicly appealed to Works and Infrastructure Minister Jearlean John to urgently address what she described as deteriorating road conditions within the borough.
In a video shared on social media, the mayor said she was speaking on behalf of Councillor Amber Caines, the Diego Martin Borough Corporation and the residents they serve. Standing beside what appeared to be a large pothole or damaged section of roadway, Glasgow-Warner stressed that responsibility for major roads rests with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
“The Corporation cannot continue to be blamed for the things that you all are neglecting,” the mayor said, calling on the ministry to “do your part.”
She further argued that the borough corporation lacks the financial resources to undertake repairs on roads outside its jurisdiction, stating that each councillor had been allocated only $50,000 under the Ministry of Local Government.
“Even if we wanted to assist, we can’t because we don’t have enough funds to do it,” she said, adding that her appeal was being made in the interest of motorists and nearby residents rather than for political purposes.
Glasgow-Warner ended her message by urging the minister to deploy Ministry of Works crews to the affected area as soon as possible, claiming that residents of Diego Martin should not continue to face unsafe road conditions.
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure had not publicly responded to the mayor’s appeal at the time of publication.
