MP Marvin Gonzales: Preventive Detention Orders Being Used to Silence Citizens

Opposition MP Marvin Gonzales has accused the government of weaponizing Preventive Detention Orders (PDOs) to silence citizens rather than combat crime. In a strongly worded statement, the Member of Parliament for Arouca/Lopinot argued that PDOs, intended as an extraordinary measure, are now being used routinely, violating due process and fundamental rights. Gonzales claimed that over 95% of detainees are eventually released, especially when the state of emergency ends. He pointed to reports from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights expressing concerns about inhumane conditions. The MP called for an immediate end to the state of emergency and a full independent investigation into the use of PDOs, alleging constitutional breaches and excesses by the state.
