Father Appeals for Justice After Reporting Alleged Child Abuse
A Trinidad and Tobago father is publicly appealing for help after alleging that his teenage son was sexually abused by a relative and that, despite reports being made to the police more than a month ago, the family is still awaiting significant progress in the investigation.
The Father said his son disclosed the alleged abuse to his mother on May 28. According to him, she immediately reported the matter to the Cunupia Police Station, where a report was filed before the child was referred for further assessments.
The Father said his son was later examined at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mount Hope and interviewed by officers attached to the Child Protection Unit. He also said a representative from the Children’s Authority has been assigned to the matter.
However, claims that since the initial report, his family has seen little visible progress in the investigation.
“The perpetrator lives one foot away from my children. Up to now, no police officer has come to our home. A month and more has passed and we are still waiting for justice for this child,” he said.
The father also alleged that the abuse took place at the office of a government Member of Parliament. He questioned whether that location may have affected the pace of the investigation.
The father is now appealing to lawyers, child advocates and members of the public for assistance in ensuring the matter is properly addressed.
“We want justice for our child. We want to make sure no other child has to go through this,” he said.
