Japan has released an updated list of 74 countries and territories whose citizens can enter the country without a visa, but Trinidad and Tobago is notably absent from the Caribbean contingent. The visa-waiver program, effective immediately, includes The Bahamas, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, and Suriname from the region, while Jamaica, Guyana, Haiti, and Belize also missed the cut.
The visa exemption is based on reciprocal agreements and aims to simplify travel for tourism, business, and personal visits. Eligible travelers can stay in Japan for up to 90 days, provided they hold an ICAO-compliant electronic passport or a machine-readable passport.
The exclusion has raised eyebrows among Trinidad and Tobago nationals, who now must continue to apply for visas in advance. The development may prompt discussions about strengthening bilateral ties and reciprocal arrangements between Port of Spain and Tokyo.
