As the rainy season sets in across Trinidad and Tobago, the Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police Service is urging the public to prioritize safety. In a new advisory, Public Information Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police Katrina Kelly Garcia stressed the dangers of heavy rainfall, including flooding, landslides, fallen trees, and hazardous road conditions.
Motorists are advised to slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and switch on headlights during heavy rain. Garcia emphasized that drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roadways, noting that even a small amount of moving water can sweep away a vehicle.
Parents are also being warned to closely supervise children and keep them away from swollen rivers, drains, and flooded areas, which can become dangerous without warning. The advisory urges early reporting of hazards such as flooded drains, fallen trees, or any situation posing a risk to public safety.
Residents should report such conditions to the municipal police or relevant emergency services immediately. According to Garcia, early reporting allows for a faster response and helps protect communities. The message is clear: stay alert, stay prepared, and look out for one another.
