In an unexpected move, the State has expanded its overseas legal team by adding two more UK barristers to represent the Commissioner of Police in the ongoing Hadeed constitutional proceedings. The bolstered team now consists of four experienced advocates: Sir James Eadie KC, Anthony Peto KC, Robert Strang, and Thomas Cleaver, all specialists in senior constitutional and public law.
The team’s collective expertise brings together senior constitutional and public law specialists as the proceedings continue before the High Court and Court of Appeal. This expansion comes as the Hadeed constitutional case continues to grip the public’s attention with its potential far-reaching implications for public administration and constitutional law in Trinidad and Tobago.
Despite public interest, the actual legal fees remain under wraps. A graphic accompanying the announcement suggests the legal team’s combined hourly value could be between TT$24,000 and TT$46,000+ based on an exchange rate of £1 to TT$9.05. However, these numbers are estimated and depend on various factors such as the complexity of the case, the duration of proceedings, and the urgency of work.
While these estimated figures have sparked public discussion, the State has yet to provide an official confirmation of the legal team’s fees, maintaining that such information remains confidential.
