Hiking Trip Ends in Tragedy for 22-Year-Old Donald Francis at Marianne Gorge

A recreational hiking trip to Marianne Gorge in Blanchisseuse ended in tragedy after 22-year-old Donald Francis of Tacarigua went missing while attempting to swim across the gorge.

According to a report by the Trinidad Express, Francis disappeared at approximately 3.30 p.m. on Sunday while attempting to cross the water to join four other members of his hiking group who had already reached the opposite side.

Francis reportedly failed to make it across, prompting his companions to immediately begin searching for him.

The incident triggered search operations involving emergency responders and rescue personnel.

The Hunters Search and Rescue Team (HSRT) subsequently confirmed that Francis' body had been located and recovered by officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service during search operations.

The tragic incident highlights the potential dangers associated with swimming in natural waterways, particularly in unfamiliar environments where water depth, currents and underwater conditions may be difficult to assess.

Marianne Gorge, located in the forested Blanchisseuse area, is among Trinidad's natural attractions visited by hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The circumstances surrounding Francis' disappearance and death remain subject to any further findings from the relevant authorities.

What began as an outdoor adventure with friends has ended in the loss of a young life.

TG News extends condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Donald Francis.
