Five-Day Suspension After Cedros Student Beaten, Mother Demands Justice and School Transfer for Daughter

A five-day suspension handed down to a student involved in an attack on a 13-year-old girl from Cedros Secondary School has raised questions about disciplinary measures and the protection of children from school violence.

The incident occurred on October 26, 2026, near a community pavilion outside the school's compound, while the Form One student was waiting for transportation home.

According to a November 4 report by the Trinidad Guardian, the girl's mother alleged that her daughter was lured towards a nearby shop by another student whom she considered a friend.

The mother claimed the student removed her shirt before attacking her daughter, striking her, throwing her to the ground and causing her head to hit a lamp post.

The incident was captured in a 24-second video that subsequently circulated on social media.

The 13-year-old reportedly sustained injuries to both knees and was still limping days after the confrontation.

However, the girl's mother expressed particular concern about how the situation was handled immediately following the incident.

She said her daughter, despite being injured and bleeding, was allowed to travel home by school bus rather than having a parent contacted to collect her.

The mother subsequently took her daughter to Point Fortin Hospital for medical treatment before reporting the matter to police.

Ministry Confirms Suspension

The Ministry of Education confirmed that the incident was reported to the school's vice-principals and that a meeting was held with the parents of both students.

One student received a five-day suspension, while both teenagers were referred to the Student Support Services Division.

However, the victim's mother remains dissatisfied with the outcome.

She said the student involved in the attack has already returned to school following the suspension, while her daughter continues to experience physical and emotional difficulties.

According to the mother, her daughter has been struggling with eating, sleeping and communicating with family members since the incident.

She also alleged that the girl had previously experienced teasing about her appearance, including her shoes, since entering Cedros Secondary.

Mother Wants Daughter Transferred

The mother is now appealing to Education Minister Dr Michael Dowlath to assist with transferring her daughter to another school.

She said she no longer feels comfortable sending her daughter back to the same institution and intends to pursue criminal charges over the incident.

The case comes amid renewed national discussion about violence involving schoolchildren.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has pledged a zero-tolerance approach towards school violence, including the possibility of expulsion in serious cases.

The Government has also indicated that it is considering legislation that could hold parents accountable for their children's actions.

However, the Cedros incident raises an important question about how schools and education authorities should balance disciplinary consequences, rehabilitation and the safety of victims.

For the injured student's family, the immediate priority remains her recovery, protection and access to an educational environment where she feels safe.

The incident also highlights the importance of addressing allegations of bullying before confrontations escalate into physical violence.
