The Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce issued a press release on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, condemning a shooting that left a businesswoman and a customer injured in the Couva area.
The Chamber called for urgent government action, demanding increased police patrols and stronger security measures across Couva, Point Lisas and surrounding commercial districts ahead of the busy Christmas shopping season.
It also urged the government to accelerate the rollout of Firearm User’s Licences for business owners, citing the need for clearer timelines and a streamlined application process.
The organization stressed that businesses cannot shoulder rising crime risks while managing economic pressures, and called for greater coordination among police, government and the private sector to restore confidence.
“The time for decisive action is now,” the Chamber declared, emphasizing that protecting commercial communities must remain a national priority as retailers prepare for peak holiday sales.
