A mother accused of leaving her four minor children, including a two-month-old baby, home alone for three days while she went on a weekend cruise faced a sharp rebuke from Judge Mindy Glazer during a Tuesday hearing.
“You cannot make this up,” Glazer said, according to a video transcript of the proceeding. “It says she went on a cruise and left her children home alone.” The judge noted the infant was born in July and questioned, “Who leaves a baby alone like that?”
Glazer said the children were left alone for three days and that the mother had planned to drop them off at their grandmother’s house but never did. “These poor kids were home alone for three days,” she said. “I guess there’s probable cause for child neglect. We’re just grateful nothing worse happened to these kids.”
Belizaire’s attorney told the court she denies the allegations. When the attorney stated the denial, Glazer replied, “Of course she does.” The defense also argued that at this stage it is only an allegation and that others, including fathers and grandparents, can bear responsibility for children. The attorney said Belizaire was arrested as she disembarked from the cruise.
One of the fathers grew concerned and called the police, according to the hearing. Glazer entered a stay-away order from the children until TCF can investigate.
