Apple Unveils First Foldable iPhone Starting at Nearly TT$14,000
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market, unveiling the iPhone Duo, the company’s first iPhone designed to fold open into a larger display. The new device was announced on Wednesday, September 9, with a starting price of US$1,999 for the 256GB model. At a straightforward currency conversion, that works out to approximately TT$13,600, before any shipping costs, taxes, duties or local retailer mark-ups are added.
The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display when closed, allowing it to function much like a conventional smartphone. When unfolded, users get a 7.6-inch inner display, which Apple says is the largest display ever offered on an iPhone.
Apple says both screens use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition proportionally as users move between the outer and inner displays. The larger screen is designed to provide additional space for watching content, gaming and multitasking. The inner display also features a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare, while the folding mechanism uses a precision hinge developed to provide a smooth opening and closing experience.
The device is available in Star White and Night Sky, with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
The launch represents one of Apple’s biggest changes to the physical design of the iPhone since the smartphone was introduced in 2007. It also places Apple directly into a foldable market where competing manufacturers have already spent years developing folding phones.
For consumers in Trinidad and Tobago, however, the price could become just as significant as the folding technology.
The roughly TT$13,600 conversion represents only the US starting price. The eventual cost of importing or purchasing the device locally could be higher once additional charges and retailer pricing are taken into account.
Apple’s move also confirms years of speculation over whether the company would eventually introduce a foldable iPhone. Rather than simply modifying the traditional iPhone design, the Duo gives users a compact phone when closed and a substantially larger workspace when opened.
With a US$1,999 starting price, Apple’s first attempt at a folding iPhone is firmly positioned as a premium device.
