The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has announced plans to hold a meeting aimed at examining issues impacting Rastafarians throughout the region. This follows persistent cases of discrimination and marginalisation experienced by Rastafarians not only in the region but also internationally. The decision was made at the Forty-second Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government on 8 May 2026.
During the meeting, it was noted that many Rastafarians continue to face exclusion in various sectors including education, employment, and public life. The importance of ensuring full recognition and protection of the rights of Rastafarians as equal members of society was reaffirmed.
A committee has been established, comprising representatives from Barbados, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. The committee will focus on advancing the consideration of issues affecting Rastafarians at both regional and international levels.
Several positive national initiatives have already been undertaken by Member States to address historical injustices experienced by Rastafarians. These include official public apologies, provision of land grants, and legislation to protect individuals from discrimination in the workplace. These initiatives are seen as examples of progressive action that could inform a coordinated regional approach.
