Serious Conflict of Interest Threatens Boxing Integrity Ahead of Key Fight

Concerns regarding potential bias and conflicts of interest within the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control are intensifying as the date of the Shantel Adam vs Tianna Guy contest approaches.

Questions surrounding the governance of boxing in Trinidad and Tobago have intensified ahead of the highly anticipated professional bout between Shantel Adam and Tianna Guy, with calls being made for the Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control to step aside amid allegations of bias and conflicts of interest.
The controversy was brought into the spotlight by promoter Kirt Sinnette, who publicly accused the Chairman of conduct that he believes undermines confidence in the sport’s regulatory system. Sinnette argued that the position of Chairman carries significant responsibility, likening it to a quasi-judicial role that requires complete neutrality and independence.
According to Sinnette, the Chairman has allegedly made public remarks targeting promoters and stakeholders within the boxing fraternity, including reportedly referring to some individuals as “rats.” He contends that such statements create the appearance of prejudice against individuals who may later be required to appear before the Board in matters relating to disputes, protests, disciplinary proceedings, licensing issues, or appeals.
Sinnette warned that any perception of bias could cast doubt on the fairness of future decisions, particularly with the Adam-Guy contest approaching. The Board is responsible for overseeing professional boxing in Trinidad and Tobago, including appointing referees and judges and regulating the conduct of sanctioned bouts.
The promoter also raised concerns about the Chairman’s alleged involvement with amateur boxing organizations while simultaneously serving as head of the professional regulatory body. He questioned whether such associations could potentially create conflicts of interest and called for an independent review of the matter.
Among the allegations raised were claims that the Chairman has maintained close ties with individuals connected to one side of the upcoming contest and that his actions could compromise confidence in the selection of officials and the handling of any disputes that may arise from the fight.
Sinnette further claimed that members of the Board have allegedly been threatened and urged the Government to intervene before the situation escalates further. He called on Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Minister of Sport Philip Watts to examine the concerns and take what he described as necessary corrective action.
The promoter argued that maintaining public confidence in boxing is critical and warned that unresolved governance concerns could expose the sport to legal challenges and further division within the local boxing community.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and at the time of publication no response from the Chairman or the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control was available regarding the claims.
With the Adam-Guy showdown drawing closer, stakeholders across the boxing fraternity are watching closely to see whether the concerns raised will prompt official action or an independent review of the Board’s operations.
The upcoming contest is expected to be one of the most closely watched local boxing events of the year, but discussions surrounding governance and sporting integrity are now threatening to overshadow the action inside the ring.
