Tragic news emerged from the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca as Christopher Banfield, a 48-year-old inmate on remand for the murder of his elderly father, was found dead in his cell. Discovered during routine cell checks on Tuesday, June 9, at around 5:30 a.m., Banfield was found motionless, displaying signs of a severe assault, including facial swelling and blood from his mouth.

Banfield’s death comes just a year after he was charged with the brutal murder of his father, Peter Banfield. The elderly man was found strangled with multiple blunt force injuries at their home in Flanagin Town.

Preliminary inquiries into Christopher Banfield’s death suggest that he was involved in an overnight altercation with a fellow inmate. The assault was reportedly prolonged and brutal, leading to Banfield’s eventual collapse and unresponsiveness.

This incident has prompted a homicide investigation by local police. A post-mortem examination is to be conducted at the Forensic Science Centre to determine the exact cause of Banfield’s death. Meanwhile, the prison cell has been processed by Crime Scene Investigators and homicide detectives.

As investigations continue, authorities are also considering whether criminal charges will be laid against the inmate implicated in Banfield’s assault. Christopher Banfield’s untimely death illustrates the harsh realities faced within our prison system.
