Has the standard changed?

Pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to remove Housing Minister David Lee from Cabinet following a High Court ruling on November 4, 2026.

Justice Westmin James dismissed Lee’s legal challenge to his re-arrest and committal for trial, allowing criminal proceedings involving an alleged TT$1.4 million vehicle tax-exemption fraud to continue.

Opposition Chief Whip Marvin Gonzales has called for Lee’s removal, while Government Minister Barry Padarath has accused the PNM of hypocrisy.

Lee has not been convicted and remains presumed innocent. But the controversy raises a question about the Prime Minister’s own political precedent.

Is David Lee being held to the same standard as those who came before him?

KAMLA’S RECORD: WHO HAD TO GO?

History provides several examples: 2011 — Mary King: Fired as Planning Minister over a conflict-of-interest controversy involving a TT$100,000 government contract. 2013 — Jack Warner: Resigned as National Security Minister following a CONCACAF investigation into allegations of financial misconduct. Kamla famously told him, “Clear your name and come back home.” 2014 — Anil Roberts: Resignation accepted as Sport Minister following the LifeSport scandal, involving allegations of fraud and financial irregularities. 2015 — Anand Ramlogan: Fired as Attorney General amid a controversy involving allegations of witness interference. 2015 — Gary Griffith: Fired as National Security Minister during the same witness-interference controversy involving Ramlogan. 2019 — Gerald Ramdeen: Resigned as UNC senator after corruption-related charges were laid. Persad-Bissessar accepted his resignation, saying she did not have to request it. The charges were subsequently discontinued in 2022.

These cases involved different circumstances. Some ministers were dismissed, others resigned, and allegations did not automatically establish criminal guilt.

WHAT HAS CHANGED?

Jack Warner was told to clear his name. Mary King was fired. Anand Ramlogan and Gary Griffith were removed. Anil Roberts left Cabinet. Gerald Ramdeen left the Senate.

In several cases, action came before any criminal conviction.

Today, David Lee remains a Cabinet minister while criminal proceedings continue.

The Prime Minister has defended his continued appointment, and the courts have not found him guilty.

But the presumption of innocence is a legal principle. Ministerial accountability is a separate political responsibility.

The question is not whether David Lee is guilty. That is for the courts to determine.

The question is whether the Prime Minister’s earlier standard still applies.

If the principle was good enough for Warner, King, Ramlogan, Griffith, Roberts and Ramdeen, what makes Lee different?

Or has the rule changed with the political circumstances?

Is David Lee the exception to the rule?

[65

post-7194","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-united-states
["GET
