Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, a 19-year-old Samoan woman from Jimboomba in Queensland, has died in hospital after a shooting at a venue south of Brisbane, Samoa Global News reports. Schuster-Togiatau was shot in the head and neck at Fitzys Loganholme on Saturday night. She died at Princess Alexandra Hospital on Thursday morning, according to the report. Four people were shot when two masked men opened fire during a boxing event at the venue. Three men were also taken to hospital. Logan District Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said the case had become a homicide investigation following Schuster-Togiatau’s death. Galpin appealed for anyone with information about those responsible or the circumstances of the shooting to contact police. The report said about 80 detectives were working on the investigation and that police had received substantial information in the days after the attack. Police had not ruled out gang involvement, Galpin said, while stressing that investigators were working to establish who was responsible and why the shooting occurred. The report did not establish a motive. Two of the other people wounded had been released from hospital, while one remained for further treatment, according to Galpin. He said police were in contact with Schuster-Togiatau’s family and would continue supporting them. Logan City Mayor Jon Raven also expressed sadness at her death and acknowledged the loss felt by her family, friends and community. A fundraising page supporting Schuster-Togiatau and her whānau had collected more than $53,000 towards a $70,000 target at the time of the report. Those figures represent the amount reported by Samoa Global News rather than a live fundraising total. Galpin also thanked people at the venue who provided first aid before emergency services arrived. He said their assistance had helped responders during a confused and hectic scene, while urging the community to continue providing information to investigators.
