Samoa’s national high-performance rugby programmes will move under the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, SASNOC, under temporary arrangements agreed while concerns about rugby governance are reviewed. The agreement brings together World Rugby, the Government of Samoa, Lakapi Samoa and SASNOC. A government statement published by Samoa Global News says the priority is to protect players and allow national teams to continue preparing for and competing in international tournaments. The arrangements follow meetings in Apia involving World Rugby Chairman Brett Robinson, Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polāta’ivao Fosi Schmidt and other rugby stakeholders. According to the statement, the prime minister and other stakeholders had raised concerns about Lakapi Samoa’s governance and administration. Under the agreement, Lakapi Samoa will temporarily suspend itself from the World Rugby Council. Returning will require a formal request for reinstatement through the World Rugby Executive Board, followed by a recommendation to the Council. Two separate reviews are planned. An independent, Samoan-led group will examine concerns about rugby governance and management, with its membership to be agreed by Lakapi Samoa and the government. A World Rugby oversight committee will separately assess Lakapi Samoa’s compliance with the requirements and standards of World Rugby membership. SASNOC will assume responsibility for national-team preparation, administration and participation in major international competitions. A specially appointed stewardship group will provide joint oversight of the high-performance programmes, covering matters both on and off the field. The statement identifies the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, World Rugby Nations Cup, WXV Global Series Challenger and international sevens competitions among the events for which Samoa’s teams will continue preparing and participating. Domestic rugby activities and competitions are to continue as normal while the reviews take place. The agreement is described as temporary, providing support for national teams while the parties consider the future governance of rugby in Samoa.
