The finding complicates the idea that replacing imports would automatically make healthy eating more accessible.

The Cost of the Diet analysis found that most households could afford a basic diet meeting energy needs, but more than 40% could not afford a nutritious one. A nutritious diet cost more than four times as much as the basic energy-only diet.

These findings draw an important distinction between obtaining enough food energy and being able to afford adequate nutrition. They also show why the price of a wholly local diet matters when considering food resilience.

The report describes Samoa as facing a triple burden of malnutrition: obesity, undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. WFP links the nutrition crisis partly to a shift from traditional diets towards imported, ultra-processed foods, alongside rising food prices that make healthy diets harder to access.

That does not mean every imported food is nutritionally equivalent. The analysis simultaneously identifies problems associated with imported, ultra-processed foods and finds that including imported items can reduce the cost of a nutritious diet.

Could Samoa manage a week without food imports? This evidence cannot establish that. The published findings do not provide food stock levels, the volume of available local production or the capacity to distribute replacement supplies during an interruption.

What they do establish is a substantial affordability problem. WFP calls for stronger local food systems and coordination across agriculture, health, education and trade. The practical challenge is to make nutritious food accessible, rather than treating local origin alone as proof that a diet will be affordable.

[1

post-6910","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
