A University of Cambridge history project offers reasons to examine that question carefully, but no evidence that a nationwide suspension would improve learning. Its archive-based account shows how differently homework has been experienced across schools, generations and households.

Published in September 2020, the Secondary Education and Social Change project’s article explores pupil and parent experiences since 1945. It describes homework as a means of practising lessons and encouraging independent work, while documenting the responsibilities it placed on children, families and teachers. These historical purposes do not establish how effective particular assignments were.

One striking comparison comes from a survey of male pupils conducted by England’s Central Advisory Council for Education in November and December 1947. Among secondary modern boys surveyed, 71 per cent had no homework, compared with 2 per cent of grammar school boys. More than an hour’s homework was reported for 5 per cent of secondary modern boys and 55 per cent of grammar school boys. Those figures describe a particular historical sample, rather than today’s pupils or the entire UK.

School documents also reveal how homework extended school routines into family life. A guide for entrants and parents at Llanedeyrn High School in Cardiff in the 2000s asked parents or carers to sign pupil planners weekly and take a close interest in completed work. Homework therefore involved expectations of parental participation as well as independent study.

The Cambridge account identifies another consideration: access to a quiet place to work in a busy household. It says emergency home learning during the 2020 school closures highlighted longstanding difficulties surrounding schoolwork at home. That observation raises an equity question, but does not measure whether abolishing ordinary homework would narrow attainment differences.

These records make a uniform verdict difficult. They document unequal experiences and competing expectations, without comparing learning outcomes under homework and no-homework arrangements. A year without assignments remains a hypothetical experiment: this historical evidence supplies questions about learning, household conditions and parental involvement, rather than proof that abolition would help or harm pupils.

[61

post-6898","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-united-kingdom
["GET
