The explanation combines railway timetables, Greenwich’s role in navigation and a wartime decision to shift daylight into the evening. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, from late October to late March, then British Summer Time, one hour ahead, for the warmer months. According to the Global City Time guide, the country’s relatively limited east-to-west extent makes a shared time zone practical, even though local solar time differs between places. That national uniformity developed alongside the railways. The guide describes an earlier Britain in which towns kept their own solar time: Oxford was approximately five minutes behind London, Bristol ten minutes and Penzance 22. Railway schedules created a practical reason to replace those local differences with a common reference. The Great Western Railway adopted London time across its network, helping spread what became known as railway time. Greenwich’s importance also extended beyond domestic travel. The guide identifies the Statutes (Definition of Time) Act as the measure establishing GMT as the legal standard throughout Great Britain. It separately dates the international adoption of Greenwich as the prime meridian to 1884, explaining that shipping already relied heavily on charts using Greenwich as their reference. The seasonal adjustment came later. Builder William Willett promoted the idea in a 1907 pamphlet, but died in 1915 before its introduction. British Summer Time followed in 1916 as a wartime fuel-saving measure, according to the guide. Under the present schedule described in the source, clocks advance on the last Sunday of March and return on the last Sunday of October. Consequently, GMT is not an accurate year-round label for British civil time: for roughly seven months, the applicable setting is BST. The distinction helps explain the arrangement. A shared national clock developed to coordinate activity across places; the summer adjustment changes how clock hours align with daylight. Those historical purposes explain how the system emerged, without establishing that today’s arrangement is necessarily the best possible choice.

[61

post-6538","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-united-kingdom
["GET
