It does not matter that it was not an Iere Ride driver. It’s a fellow human being. A fellow citizen. A fellow member of the rideshare community.”

Farrell highlighted the financial and emotional consequences of these incidents, particularly at a time when many citizens are turning to alternative income opportunities to support themselves and their families.

For some drivers, ridesharing represents their only source of income, while others rely on it to supplement earnings and meet household expenses.

She noted that losing a vehicle, mobile phone, identification documents, bank cards or money through robbery can create significant financial hardship, compounded by the emotional trauma of the experience.

The concerns, she emphasised, extend beyond drivers to passengers who also want reassurance that their journeys will be safe.

Safety Must Be a Priority

Farrell explained that Iere Ride has made safety an important part of its operating model, incorporating security features directly into its mobile application.

These include an in-app panic button designed to alert members of the company’s security and safety protocol task force during emergencies.

According to Farrell, security personnel are on call to respond promptly to incidents, while users also have options within the application to alert local authorities.

Passengers can additionally share their live GPS location with trusted contacts in real time, providing another layer of reassurance during their journeys.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe, day or night, male or female, young or old, driver or rider. Safety is all of our concern as a nation,” Farrell stated.

She acknowledged the responsibilities of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service but maintained that additional measures could help citizens feel more comfortable using public transportation.

Protecting Livelihoods While Growing the Economy

Beyond the immediate security concerns, Farrell believes the rideshare industry has an increasingly important role to play in Trinidad and Tobago’s economic landscape.

With citizens seeking new ways to earn an income, she sees ridesharing as part of a broader movement towards entrepreneurship and participation in the gig economy.

“Transportation isn’t purely about getting from ‘Point A’ to ‘Point B’. At Iere Ride, we see mobility as a broader economic enabler for Trinidad and Tobago,” she explained.

She said the company’s vision extends beyond moving passengers, focusing instead on connecting communities and integrating transportation solutions into a wider mobility ecosystem.

However, Farrell cautioned that strengthening safety must not come at the expense of affordability or the earning potential of drivers.

“The bottomline is to avoid sacrificing value or let safety measures affect the affordability factor,” she said.

She explained that Iere Ride regards its drivers as strategic partners and local brand ambassadors rather than simply participants in the gig economy, adding that drivers receive the lion’s share of earnings from each ride.

For Farrell, the issue ultimately extends beyond any single rideshare company. It is about protecting livelihoods, restoring confidence and ensuring that people can travel or earn a living without unnecessary fear.

She expressed hope that stronger collaboration among stakeholders would become standard practice across the industry, creating a safer environment for drivers and passengers alike.

Her message reinforces a fundamental concern: no one should have to choose between earning an honest living and feeling safe while doing so.

Iere Ride’s Nicole Farrell Calls for Stronger Safety Measures Following Recent Rideshare Driver Robbery

[62

post-6502","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trinidad-and-tobago
["GET
