The tradition has a distinctive rhythm and formation, but its beginnings remain uncertain.

According to Luxembourg’s Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, the procession honours Willibrord, the Irish missionary who founded the Abbey of Echternach and lived from 658 to 739. Participants line up in rows of five, linked by handkerchiefs or scarves folded into triangles. They advance with hopping steps as brass bands play an old popular melody, following the narrow streets to his tomb in the basilica’s crypt.

The commission’s account describes a tradition bringing together some 8,000 dancers each year. Yet the lack of historical documents makes its origin difficult to establish. The hopping practice was first mentioned at the end of the 15th century. Around 1100, Father Thiofrid had already described a large Pentecost gathering of pilgrims, but his account did not mention dancing.

Several explanations have been proposed. One connects the practice with the flagellant processions of the 13th and 14th centuries and historical beliefs about imitating movements to prevent or cure certain illnesses. Another links it to a vow by parishioners from Waxweiler in the Eifel following a great calamity. Other commentators have interpreted it as a transformed pagan rite incorporated into the region’s Christianisation.

These remain interpretations, rather than an established explanation. The uncertainty is part of the procession’s history, alongside its survival through numerous prohibitions.

On 16 November 2010, UNESCO’s intergovernmental committee voted unanimously to inscribe the procession on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That recognition concerns a living practice: knowledge, music and coordinated movement passed between people, even while the question of how it began remains open.

[1

post-6430","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
