Her parliamentary work offers a concrete reason to revisit her place in the country’s political history.

A biographical account published by Luxembourg Official records that Thomas-Clément, who lived from 1886 to 1979, entered the Chamber of Deputies as a Social Democrat representing the Centre constituency. She remained its only woman deputy until 1931.

That prolonged isolation gives her election significance beyond the achievement of being first. Women had gained access to electoral politics, but the composition of parliament still reflected a substantial gap in representation. Her presence marked a change without demonstrating that equal participation had been achieved.

According to the biography, Thomas-Clément introduced a draft bill seeking full civil and economic equality between women and men. It did not pass. Her record therefore illustrates both an attempt to change the law and the limits of what she secured through parliament.

Her advocacy extended to working conditions and wage disparities. The account also describes her criticism of inadequate sanitary conditions at the national maternity hospital and her interventions concerning detained sex workers suffering from contagious diseases. These subjects connected political equality with specific questions of employment, health and treatment by public institutions.

Thomas-Clément later left the Socialist Party and failed to win re-election in 1931. The biography says her contributions were not widely celebrated during her lifetime, although her pioneering role subsequently received recognition in historical retrospectives. It provides no measure of present-day public awareness, so describing her as forgotten would go further than the evidence allows.

Her documented parliamentary record supplies a firmer basis for remembrance. She was Luxembourg’s first woman deputy, remained its sole female representative for years, and used that position to raise questions about women’s legal status and everyday welfare. Remembering those efforts also means recognising that entering parliament and winning legislative change were distinct challenges.

[1

post-6408","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
