Jamaican poet, fiction writer and essayist Kei Miller turns 48 on October 24, 2026. His birthday offers an opportunity to celebrate a writer whose work spans poetry, short stories, novels and essays, bringing Jamaican subjects into a wide-ranging literary career.

Born on October 24, 1978, Miller studied English at the University of the West Indies, leaving before graduation. His biography records that he subsequently began publishing widely throughout the Caribbean. In 2004, he moved to England to pursue a master’s degree in creative writing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

His early books show how readily he moved between forms. His first poetry collection, Kingdom of Empty Bellies, appeared in 2006. A short-story collection, The Fear of Stones and Other Stories, followed, earning a place on the 2007 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize shortlist for Best First Book in the Canada and Caribbean category.

Another poetry collection, There Is an Anger That Moves, was published in 2007. That year, Miller also edited New Caribbean Poetry: An Anthology, adding the work of bringing together other Caribbean poets to his own writing.

Jamaica offers a particularly vivid point of connection in The Cartographer Tries to Map a Way to Zion, his 2014 poetry collection. His biography notes that it includes a poem about unusual Jamaican place-names: a recognisable feature of the island’s geography finding a home in verse. His bibliography also includes Writing Down the Vision: Essays & Prophecies, reflecting the breadth of his work beyond poetry and fiction.

Recognition has accompanied that range. Miller received the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Award for Excellence in 2018. In June of the same year, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature through its “40 Under 40” initiative. His biography also records a Windham–Campbell Literature Prize in 2026.

For Jamaican readers, his 48th birthday is an invitation to explore that varied body of work—from the early poems and stories to a collection that makes space for the island’s distinctive place-names. Together, those books offer several ways into the writing of a Jamaican author with an international literary presence.
