Researching marriage and divorce under German colonial rule in Samoa took Julia H\u00fctten through archives in Samoa, New Zealand and Germany. There she encountered a 1998 television documentary showing boxes of deteriorating papers in a derelict building in Samoa. The images raised fears about whether records needed for her doctoral research had survived. Her later experience was more reassuring. She explicitly cautions that she could not establish whether the boxes in the documentary actually contained German administration records. By the time she visited Samoa, she found the papers held there receiving appropriate care from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture\u2019s archival team.
