A tanker carrying Russian diesel departed for the United States on Friday, marking the first shipment since President Donald Trump reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to release more fuel onto global markets, NBC News reported.<\/p>\n
The Malta-flagged Agioi Fanendes left Primorsk, Russia, with New York listed as its destination, according to MarineTraffic tracking data reviewed by NBC News. Market intelligence firm Energy Aspects told the broadcaster that industry sources confirmed the vessel had loaded 298,000 barrels of diesel and currently planned to unload in New York.<\/p>\n
The tanker is expected to arrive November 10. Its departure follows the Trump administration\u2019s easing of some sanctions on Russia two weeks earlier, followed by additional waivers, as the administration seeks to bring down energy prices while Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine continues.<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the departure Friday and said further shipments were expected to continue regularly. The reported delivery schedule remains prospective: the vessel\u2019s listed destination and anticipated arrival describe its current plans.<\/p>\n
The shipment comes amid a steep increase in American diesel prices. According to NBC News, the average price has climbed from $3.55 a gallon at the start of the year to $6.32, an increase of about 78%. Brent crude, a major global oil benchmark, was trading around $114 a barrel and heading toward its third consecutive weekly gain.<\/p>\n
The incoming cargo is small compared with American consumption. NBC News put daily U.S. diesel demand at approximately 3.8 million barrels, substantially more than the tanker\u2019s entire load. Energy Aspects analysts said the shipment\u2019s likely effect would be limited.<\/p>\n
Diesel costs reach beyond drivers buying fuel. In an August interview cited by NBC News, KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk explained that diesel expenses feed into farming, food costs and the movement of goods across the economy.<\/p>\n
Bank of America commodities chief Francisco Blanch attributed tight supplies of refined fuels to geopolitical disruptions. In a note cited by NBC News, he said attacks on shipping around the Strait of Hormuz were complicating energy flows, while attacks on Russian refining capacity were restricting product availability.<\/p>\n
Russia had restricted diesel exports during September and part of October amid Ukrainian attacks on its energy infrastructure, according to NBC News. Those restrictions were lifted after the agreement between Putin and Trump.<\/p>\n
The administration has also allowed broader use of an off-road diesel variety and pressed European allies to release diesel reserves, NBC News reported.
