Iceland’s National Archives preserves a collection spanning roughly 850 years, holding original sources that document the country’s settlements, society and development. Its purpose reaches beyond historical research: the institution also connects preserved records with public administration and citizens’ rights.

The archives describes its holdings as the largest collection of original sources on the history of the Icelandic nation. Public access is provided through its website and reading room, making preservation and access complementary parts of its work.

Behind those public services sits a substantial responsibility for how records are managed. The National Archives regulates documentation by bodies required to submit records, decides on document destruction, and licenses and supervises regional archives. It also accepts records for safekeeping, monitors recordkeeping and provides advice and education.

These responsibilities mean the institution’s work begins before a document becomes a historical source. Decisions about recording, retention and preservation help determine what will remain available for future examination.

Its published mission for 2022–2027 places particular emphasis on digital transformation, covering both older collections and newer electronic records. The stated aim is to preserve important information while improving access to it.

Information security is another part of that task. The archives’ policy covers physical and digital holdings, including protection against unlawful destruction, alteration, loss and unauthorised disclosure. It also requires information systems and communication channels to remain secure and reliable, with access limited to appropriately authorised users.

The institution therefore preserves more than a record of the distant past. Its continuing collection and management of documents also supports access to information about citizens’ rights and obligations—giving Iceland’s documentary memory a practical role in public life.
