The People\u2019s National Movement (PNM) has unanimously condemned the government\u2019s legislative agenda as “tyrannical, oppressive, dictatorial, unpatriotic, and misleading,” vowing to repeal multiple controversial bills if returned to power by 2030.<\/p>\n
At a special press conference following a joint meeting of the PNM\u2019s General Council and Legislative Council, Deputy Political Leader Sanjie Vuru read a motion passed unanimously by the party. The resolution explicitly names five bills\u2014including the Zones of Special Operations Bill, the Public Procurement and Disposal of Property (Public Property) Amendment Bill, and the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill 2026\u2014as “unconstitutional” and demands their immediate withdrawal.<\/p>\n
The motion states: “Be it resolved that this general council condemns in the strongest terms the oppressive, undemocratic, and unconstitutional policies of the sitting government.” It further declares that the PNM will repeal the legislation upon forming government, reaffirming its goal of regaining power “by 2030 or before.”<\/p>\n
Vuru emphasised that the PNM\u2019s stance is not merely oppositional but a direct response to what the party describes as a deliberate effort to “further hardships” faced by citizens. “We are calling on the government to cease and desist from continuing to put oppressive legislation before Parliament,” he said, warning that if the government fails to act democratically, the PNM will enforce its repeal mandate.<\/p>\n
The resolution follows weeks of parliamentary debate over the Special Operations Bill, which grants the Prime Minister direct control over policing districts and the power to declare areas “closed” without judicial oversight.
