In remarks reported by Balkan Insight on Friday, Rama rejected the idea that the unrest was being driven primarily by students’ grievances and defended his refusal to resign.

Speaking from a kiosk burned during the demonstrations, Rama portrayed the violence as the work of masked individuals and accused political opponents of exploiting young people’s dissatisfaction. He described the unrest as a form of political disruption rather than a straightforward expression of student demands. However, the report says he did not identify the alleged foreign actors or present evidence of their involvement.

Rama also argued that the government should not give in to violence in the hope of restoring calm. He maintained that a change of government must happen through elections, pointing to the Socialist Party’s landslide re-election victory the previous year. His position leaves little indication of an immediate political concession in response to the demonstrations.

The protests continued for a third consecutive day in Tirana on Thursday and spread to several provincial cities, including Durres, Shkoder, Korce and Elbasan, according to Balkan Insight. Demonstrations were accompanied by clashes, tear gas, high-pressure water cannons, fires and looting affecting public institutions and private businesses.

The report says the demonstration in the capital lasted more than 12 hours and involved university students as well as high school pupils. Protesters have called for the government’s resignation, better university conditions and action on the high cost of living. Their demands extend beyond the immediate operation of universities to wider economic and political concerns.

The movement’s origins also predate the latest confrontations. According to Balkan Insight, the so-called Flamingo Revolution initially mobilised protesters through environmental demonstrations that began in June before developing into a broader anti-government movement demanding Rama’s departure. Student demonstrations outside the Ministry of Education began on Tuesday, bringing education-related grievances into the wider protest campaign.

The spread of demonstrations beyond Tirana marks a broader geographic reach for the unrest described in the report. Rama’s response has centred on allegations of political exploitation and a defence of electoral legitimacy, while protesters continue to raise concerns about education, living costs and the government’s leadership. The report does not provide independent evidence supporting his allegation of foreign involvement, which remains an accusation attributed to the prime minister.

[65

post-5940","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-united-states
["GET
