Its crystal-clear waters carve through canyons, wetlands, and meadows, supporting brown trout, otters, and migratory birds like the Dalmatian pelican. But this natural wonder is under siege. A proposed hydropower dam project threatens to drown the river’s wild heart, sparking a conservation battle that could decide the Vjosa’s fate.

The Vjosa is a biodiversity hotspot. Its 160-kilometre stretch in Albania is part of a transboundary ecosystem shared with Greece, where it becomes the Aoos River. The area is a critical stopover for birds migrating between Africa and Europe, and its untouched gravel beds are vital for spawning fish. Yet, developers have long eyed the river’s potential for hydropower, arguing that dams could bring electricity and economic growth to rural Albania.

In 2022, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) published a protection study recommending the Vjosa be declared a strictly protected area under IUCN Category II (National Park). The report highlighted the irreversible damage dams would cause—flooding habitats, blocking fish migration, and altering water flow—while offering alternative renewable energy solutions, such as small-scale, low-impact hydropower.

The fight to save the Vjosa has united Albanian environmental groups, international NGOs, and local communities. In 2019, a global petition gathered over 100,000 signatures, and in 2021, the European Commission urged Albania to halt dam construction pending further environmental assessments. Despite this, construction has stalled but not stopped, with political and economic pressures looming.

What makes the Vjosa’s case unique is its symbolic value. In a continent where most rivers are fragmented by dams, the Vjosa represents wildness, resilience, and the possibility of rewilding. If protected, it could become a model for Europe’s future—proving that nature and development can coexist.

For now, the river flows on, but its future hangs in the balance. Whether Albania chooses concrete or conservation will determine whether the Vjosa remains a living legend or becomes just another dammed relic.

[1

post-5676","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
